about

Born from the ashes of a failed marriage and squandered academic potential, 'Painted Red' (debut album of St. Louis, MO Pop-Rock group Psych Squared) symbolizes five years of the confusion experienced by frontman Dr. Dan while trying to navigate loneliness, existential despair and heartbreak, without giving up on a singular dream of success.

It opens with a series of love songs starting with the deeply regretful (but highly danceable) 'Redact'. That gives way to 'Bittersweetheart', an old-school prog-pop experiment about delusional love. The relaxed, comfortably sad 'Solarium' then plays, which gives way to 'Red Paint' - a vindictive, high-energy track about betrayal and moving on.

After these, the pop-punk dabbling of 'Fame' serenades us with a charming honesty, and the album changes direction. We move into funk territory with 'Gargoyle' which tells a deeply visual story packed with metaphor about the dangers of corruption - then followed by 'Product Placement', a foot-tapping, politically aware jazz number that mocks the notion of materialism. We venture into spy rock (and an impressive instrumental climax) with '(Ava) Bellissario', which ponders the ethics (and sexuality) of crime, before the spooky, sobering tragedy of 'Death Urge' takes over.

The album ends on a lighter note, with an intimate message from Dr. Dan forwarding the final, triumphant love song - 'Different' - which features acoustic and electric instrumentation and a beautiful violin lead (played by Sarah Velasquez).

The album has something for everyone, with accessible melodies, deep, evocative songwriting, moving compositions, catchy rhythms, and a sense of humor about life in general, making it a stellar first move in what looks to be a long, lucrative career in art for these young creatives. This is one group that you don't want to forget about.
