The Sunrise EP is a couple of our better tracks that we've been sitting on top of for monthsandmonthsandmonths and we decided that we seriously needed to release something because all the awesome music we'd been making hasn't been getting us anything. You can't profit off of something that's collecting dust inside of a hard drive.
So, we got a manager, figured out some time tables, raised a bit of cash and busted a bunch of ass, and got this bad boy done. This is our first 'official' release - the first completed, professionally organized work that we've gotten on iTunes on our own. And it's our second EP (we released Solstice about a year ago, and what it has lacked in exposure it has more than made up for in fan appreciation). We chose tracks based upon how they would make someone that had never heard us before feel, and we wanted it to properly represent our musical influences and imagination.
Redact is one of our most beautiful compositions to date, and I'm incredibly proud of the lyrics, the bass tone, the chord progressions, the effects, the vocoding, the whole thing came together very, very nicely. I'm hoping that it will solidify our place as actual MUSICIANS when people hear it. I think it's placed well, too, because showing folks you know how music works right off the bat lets you get away with a lot more later on.
Next up is Sunshine, a feel-good chord progression that we turned into a moving, changing dance track with several tempo switches and light, floaty vocals (featuring the amazingly talented Denali singing call and response with Dr Dan). It's the closest thing to abstract art we've made musically; I'd tell you that was intentional, but, honestly, we hit a creative wall for a while with the lyrics and decided it could also be cool to just use the power of suggestion and let people figure out what they want the track to be about. I like to think the 'sunshine' idea is about getting to a point in your own existence where every day you genuinely appreciate the experiences you're given each day, "Soak it up and feel just fine."
After that is an instrumental electro track called Progressive Action. This was almost entirely composed and produced by my genius best friend, Jelani (aka DJ BaqBeet). When I first heard it, my immediate thought was, 'Damn, man, this sounds like Royksopp. This is awesome.' In the next couple of months you'll be hearing this track again, with some changes, and vocals laid down by a group of lyricists that are a part of a super-secret future project (that is really only secret if you never talk to us). Lay back and let Progressive Action take you on a journey. The destination is awesome.
And lastly, we wanted to end our EP on a HARD CORE note with the angry, socio-political rhythm and rock of, uh, Rhythm Rhythm Rock. A lot of people have told us that this should be our first heavily promoted single, but I have a lot of other things that I'm trying to heavily promote right now and if its in the cards it'll be in the future, not right now. I'M A BUSY MAN OKAY.
Overall, we hope that the Sunrise EP marks the real Sunrise of both our careers and our lives. Here we are, world, talented, and uplifting, and intelligent, and enlightened, and we're ready for everything to get awesome all at once. Come give us a listen, and buy our music if you like it! I promise you that every dime we make will go straight back into living the most artistic, creative, uplifting and hopeful life I possibly can, and I hope that means something to you. Input/Output, if you know what I'm saying.
